TaniOlohun: “ Block Your Ears Or Use Cotton Wools , Presidents Are Criticized “ -Sowore Tells Ilorin Clerics

In a recent development, human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has alleged that Isese activist TaniOlohun was forcibly taken to Ilorin by local police authorities. Sowore claims that the Ilorin police acted on an arrest warrant issued by a lower court without jurisdiction for inter-state operations.

Sowore, who posted a video on his Facebook page, asserted that Nigeria is a secular state where individuals have the right to practice their chosen faith. He explained that TaniOlohun’s arrest was a result of his criticisms against Muslim clerics and police officers in Ilorin. Allegedly, a joint effort between the police and the Muslim clerics led to TaniOlohun’s removal from Ibadan, where he might not have been arrested under genuine circumstances.

Sowore suggested that those who wish to avoid hearing nonsense should heed the advice of their elders. He metaphorically recommended blocking one’s ears with cotton wool to prevent hearing negative things said about oneself. Additionally, the Nigerian activist emphasized that Nigeria is a secular state.

The situation continues to unfold, sparking concerns over freedom of expression and the boundaries of inter-state law enforcement.

In a video statement, Sowore underscored that even presidents of nations are subjected to constant media scrutiny without facing arrests. He stressed that his role as an activist is not to endorse any specific religion, but to safeguard the rights of every Nigerian, regardless of their beliefs. Addressing the issue in Yoruba, he firmly declared, “I am committed to fighting for the rights of Muslims, Christians, and all those who are oppressed.”

Sowore revealed ongoing efforts to ensure TaniOlohun’s rights are protected during his detention in Ilorin. He further alleged that soon after TaniOlohun’s arrival at the Ilorin prison, individuals planted by the police authorities were already present, leading to a physical assault on the Isese activist. Sowore asserted that TaniOlohun’s condition is currently dire, as he has been severely beaten and is unable to stand due to injuries inflicted by the individuals associated with the Ilorin police.

The Nigerian activist and 2023 presidential election candidate, Omoyele Sowore, expressed alarm over the condition of Isese activist TaniOlohun, who is currently imprisoned in Ilorin. Sowore revealed that TaniOlohun is struggling with his health and can hardly stand on his own legs within the confines of the prison.

Sowore also took the opportunity to criticize the actions of the Ilorin police, accusing them of flouting the country’s laws. He pointed out that the arrest of individuals for burning the Islamic holy book goes against the principles of a secular state. Sowore emphasized that the burning of religious items, such as the Egungun clothes in public, has not led to any arrests, highlighting a double standard in the enforcement of the law.

In a video shared on his Facebook page, Sowore vowed to uphold the rights of all Nigerians who find themselves deprived of their constitutional rights. He reiterated that Nigeria is a secular state and pledged to safeguard the freedoms and liberties of every citizen.

TaniOlohun, arrested and imprisoned in Ilorin, Kwara State, has risen as a significant champion for the acknowledgment and safeguarding of Isese rights. Positioned at the forefront of initiatives, this activist has used the media to enhance awareness of Isese, combat bias, and ensure the rights of those who practice this tradition.
