Investors gain N535.38bn as NGX-ASI appreciates by 1.47%
Nigeria’s Equities Market closed positive on Friday by 1.47% as the NGX-ASI increased to 67,527.19 from 66,548.99 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +31.76%. The market performance for the week increased by 3.00% to 65,558.91 from 66,151.38 recorded at the beginning of the week (28/08/2023).
Market capitalization increased today by N535 billion to N36.958 trillion from N36.423 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day, while the market turnover by value decreased to N6.92 billion from N7.18 billion recorded at the close of the previous trading day.
At the end of the last weekday of trading, a total of 503,747,954 shares in 7,606 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 6,915,485,796.05, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Thursday, August 31), today’s data shows 19% decline in volume, 4% decline in turnover, and 5% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 37 trillion.
In the aggregate, 124 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 41 gainers and 14 losers. Dangote Sugar Refinery led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 60.50 per share, followed by Lasaco Assurance (+10%), Tantalizers (+10%) and National Salt Company (+9.99%).
On the losing side, Prestige Assurance Company came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 8.7% at NGN 0.42 per share, followed by Glaxo Smithkline Consumer (-6.47%), Honeywell Flour Mill (-5.88%) and Champion Breweries (-5.71%). Transcorp Nigeria recorded the highest volume of 83.3 million traded shares, followed by Fidelity Bank (58.3m), Access Holdings (34.5m) and Sterling Bank (31.4m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) increased by 978.20 (1.47%) points to close at 67,527.19, representing a 1-week gain of 3%, a 4-week gain of 3.57%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 31.76%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 50 Index (+2.99%; +3.96% 1WK; +48.55% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (+1.71%; +3.23% 1WK; +35.13% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+4.69%; +5.11% 1WK; +62.06% YTD), NGX Premium Index (+2.06%; +3.04% 1WK; +51.42% YTD), NGX Pension Index (+1.8%; +3.38% 1WK; +59.29% YTD), and NGX Insurance Index (+1.68%; +0.8% 1WK; +56.73% YTD).
