The All Progressives Congress (APC), Ebonyi State chapter, has zoned the Ebonyi South Senatorial seat to Onicha Local Government Area ahead of the upcoming rerun announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Recall that Ebonyi South Senatorial seat became vacant following the resignation of Senator David Umahi from the 10th Senate for an appointment as Minister of Works.
The party said the zoning of the Senate seat to Onicha was in the interest of justice, equity and fairness as envisaged by the Governor and leader of the party in the State, Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.
Nwifuru had while assenting to the 2024 appropriation bill last Friday said the vacant Ebonyi South Senatorial seat must be zoned to Onicha LGA for justice and equity.
The party in a communiqué signed by all the members of the State Working Committee on Tuesday, said they were in total alignment with the decisions of the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Bldr. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.
“Going by the current distribution of political positions in Ebonyi South Zone, it is only onicha LGA that has no exalted/juicy political position of honour unlike the other LGAs of the Zone which have the following positions:
I) Afikpo North LGA—Deputy Governor and House of Representatives.
II) Edda LGA— APC State Party Chairman
III) Ivo LGA —House of Representatives.
IV) Ohaozara LGA—- Minister of Works, INEC REC, SSA to Mr President, DG FHA, RAMFAC Secretary, Vice Chancellor King David University, Uburu, CMD King David University Teaching Hospital, Uburu, Ebonyi State SSG, Ebonyi State Chief Judge,”the party explained.
Ebonyi South Senatorial District is made up of five LGAs, namely: Afikpo, Edda, Ivo, Ohaozara and Onicha.
Meanwhile, Mr Austin Umahi, a young brother to Senator David Umahi from Ohaozara LGA, has declared interest to contest the Senatorial seat in deviance to the State Governor’s position.
