The Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, is dead.

Mr Akeredolu died at about 2 a.m. on Wednesday at a German hospital where he was receiving treatment, a senior government official in Ondo State told Premium Times.

He died of leukemia and prostate cancer, two ailments that had made him incapacitated for several months.

Akeredolu was born on July 21, 1956, in Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria.

He served as the Governor of Ondo State from 2017 until his untimely death on December 27, 2023. Akeredolu was a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and had a long career in law, including being a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Akeredolu attended the prestigious University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where he obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1977. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1978 and went on to establish a successful career in law, culminating in his appointment as Attorney General of Ondo State from 1997 to 1999.

In 2017, Akeredolu was elected Governor of Ondo State and was sworn into office on February 24. Akeredolu’s sudden passing on December 27, 2023, due to complications from leukemia, was met with shock and sadness from his colleagues and supporters.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, and their children.
