Lagos State Injustice: Osu- Apena Royal Family Protests Unlawful Oba Installation, Demands Justice And Preservation Of Tradition

In the heart of Odi-olowo in Odi-olowo Ojuwoye LCDA, the Osu-Apena Royal family has convened a press conference to bring to light what they perceive as a severe injustice orchestrated by the Lagos State government. The crux of their discontent centers around the controversial installation of Mr. Sikiru Olamide Williams as the Oba of Odi-olowo. According to the Osu-Apena Royal family, this installation was not only improper but also involved collusion between Odi-olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA authorities and specific representatives.

The family contends that the installation of Mr. Williams blatantly violated established rules and regulations outlined in the official gazette, which governs the meticulous selection process for a candidate to ascend to the revered traditional stool. Despite Mr. Williams having a maternal connection to the family, the Osu-Apena Royal family vehemently denies his selection as their chosen candidate. They emphasize that no family meeting or decision was ever made to anoint him as the Oba, raising serious concerns about the legitimacy of his claim to the throne.

Adding a layer to their grievances, the family highlights the existence of unresolved criminal and civil cases against Mr. Williams currently in the Lagos State courts. Despite these legal challenges, the Lagos State government, in collaboration with local authorities, proceeded with the installation, a move staunchly opposed by the Osu-Apena Royal family. They decry this as a blatant violation of their heritage, tradition, and customs, questioning the integrity of the selection process.

Drawing parallels with a landmark case, the Onigbako of Irede, where lawyer Eleto secured a judgment against the Lagos State government, the Osu-Apena Royal family underscores the court’s pronouncement that the installation of an Oba should not take place if there is a pending court matter related to the chieftaincy dispute. In the case of Mr. Williams, the family alleges that the Lagos State government disregarded this judicial guidance, further deepening their sense of injustice.

Alhaji Akeem Apena, a Brazil-based Nigerian arts and culture promoter and a member of the Royal family, adds his voice to the chorus of discontent. He emphatically states, “The acclaimed King is not due for the throne; that’s the reason the family has not approved of his selection. The governor can’t select for our family.” This statement not only reinforces the family’s disapproval of Mr. Williams but also questions the authority of external entities in dictating the internal matters of the Osu-Apena Royal family.

Expanding on their narrative, the family provides the public with detailed information about the ongoing legal proceedings against Mr. Williams. Matters before Hon. Justice Folami of Ikeja High Courts and a criminal action on forgery of signatures before the Chief Magistrate Court, Yaba, are brought to the forefront. To underscore the gravity of these cases, the family attaches hard copies of the legal documents, urging the public to scrutinize the evidence and form their own judgments.

In a broader appeal, the Osu-Apena Royal family calls upon politicians who claim to represent the people to refrain from actions detrimental to the interests of those they purportedly serve. Expressing solidarity with the Onigbako of Irede case, they demand an immediate cessation of Oba installations when chieftaincy disputes are pending in court. This plea is not just a call for justice in their specific case but a broader appeal for adherence to due process and respect for the rule of law.

The press conference concludes with the signature of Abdul-Gaffar Raheem-Apena, the Secretary of the Osu-Apena Royal family. In his concluding remarks, he expresses gratitude and extends blessings to Lagos State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, underscoring the family’s commitment to seeking justice, upholding their heritage, and preserving their cherished traditions.
