Equities Market continues on bearish trend as NGX-ASI declines by 0.11%

Nigeria’s Equities Market closed negative on Tuesday by -0.11% as the NGX-ASI decreased to 104,553.31 from 104,663.34 recorded at the close of the previous trading day, indicating a YTD return of +39.83%.

Market capitalization decreased by N62.21 billion to N59.116 billion from N59.178 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day, just as the market turnover decreased to N7.594 billion from N10.801 billion.
At the end of today’s trading session a total of 307,046,702 shares in 9,548 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 7,593,505,292.76, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Monday, March 18), today’s data shows 7% improvement in volume, 30% decline in turnover, but 5% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 59.1 trillion.

In the aggregate, 122 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 27 gainers and 23 losers. International Energy Insurance led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 1.32 per share, followed by International Breweries (+9.89%), Juli (+9.85%) and N.E.M. Insurance Company (+9.59%). On the losing side, Daar Communications came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.86% at NGN 0.64 per share, followed by Computer Warehouse Group (-9.09%), Sovereign Trust Insurance (-8.51%) and UPDC Real Estate Investment Trust (-6.36%). FBN Holdings recorded the highest volume of 37.8 million traded shares, followed by United Bank for Africa (36.9m), Access Holdings (28.1m) and Transcorp Nigeria (21.6m).

Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 110.03 (-0.11%) points to close at 104,553.31, representing a 1-week gain of 0.99%, a 4-week gain of 3.46%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 39.83%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.16%; +0.69% 1WK; +39.08% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+1.07%; +8.81% 1WK; +11.99% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+0.59%; +3.39% 1WK; +16.27% YTD), NGX Consumer Goods Index (+0.16%; +0.61% 1WK; +45.31% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (+0.12%; +0.24% 1WK; +77.35% YTD), and NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0.04%; +0.05% 1WK; +23.79% YTD)
