May Day: Gov. Eno declares work-free farming days in Akwa Ibom, approves additional N2 bn for gratuities
In line with the ARISE Agenda’s food security goals, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has designated the first and third Fridays of each month as work-free days to facilitate workers’ engagement in farming activities.
Governor Eno made this announcement during the 2024 May Day celebration at the Uyo Township Stadium, Uyo, themed “People First.”
He emphasized his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, noting the disbursement of N16.1 billion towards gratuity payments and approving an additional N2 billion to reduce gratuity backlogs, totaling N18.1 billion disbursed under his tenure.
Expressing gratitude for labor’s support during elections, he pledged continued support for workers’ welfare, including ongoing gratuity payments, refunds for pension contributions, promotions, affordable housing initiatives, infrastructure projects, and recruitment in the health sector.
Regarding the minimum wage, Governor Eno stated readiness to implement new rates once federal guidelines are established. He also declared the first and last Friday of each month as Farm Days, emphasizing productivity over leisure.
The Governor presented vehicles to NLC and TUC chairmen, acknowledging labor’s partnership. Labour leaders commended the Governor’s swift actions in fulfilling promises, particularly in gratuity payments, pension refunds, and overall welfare improvements.
