Brazilian Congressman Faces Backlash for Controversial Remarks on African Cognitive Capacity
Brazilian congressman Gustavo Gayer is facing severe criticism and backlash for his recent controversial remarks regarding the cognitive capacity of Africans. These remarks were made during a podcast recording and have been condemned by various African groups in Brazil, who perceive them as racist. In response, these groups have taken formal action by filing a complaint with the congress, demanding justice for the offensive statements.
During the podcast episode titled “3 Irmãos” (3 Brothers), Gayer expressed his belief that Brazil is experiencing a decline in intellectual capabilities. He argued that democracies cannot thrive in Africa due to what he described as the population’s limited cognitive capacity. Gayer even suggested that Brazil should refrain from granting voting rights to what he considers to be a less intelligent population.
The situation escalated when the podcast host, Rodrigo Barbosa Arantes, made a remark about monkeys having an IQ of 90. Gayer acknowledged this comment and further reinforced his derogatory viewpoint by claiming that the average IQ in Africa is 72.
Continuing his offensive narrative, Gayer asserted that most African countries are dictatorships, asserting that democracy fails to flourish in Africa due to the population’s alleged lack of cognitive abilities to discern between right and wrong. He drew comparisons to Brazil, suggesting that despite their perceived intellectual deficiencies, the people applauded the election of former president Lula.
In response to the growing controversy on social media, federal deputy Duda Salabert took to Twitter to announce her intention to seek Gayer’s impeachment by filing a request with the Ethics Council of the Chamber of Deputies. Salabert, a member of the Democratic Labor Party, emphasized the importance of not tolerating racism within the chamber and suggested that Gayer should face legal consequences in addition to losing his mandate.
When approached by CNN for comment on the controversy surrounding his remarks, Gayer remained silent. However, he later released a seven-minute video on his social media accounts, claiming that his statement had been taken out of context. Gayer argued that he was referring to the issue of malnutrition in Africa and how it can impact cognitive abilities. He accused his critics of racism and even threatened to sue Deputy Duda Salabert for accusing him of a crime.
The situation remains tense as African groups continue to demand justice, and Salabert pursues impeachment proceedings against Gayer. This incident has sparked a broader conversation in Brazil about racism, representation, and the responsibilities of public figures.
