Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, died this Thursday (29), at the age of 82. He was hospitalized at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, in São Paulo, and was under palliative care.

Former striker and top scorer of the Brazilian national team, he is considered one of the best athletes in the world and collects achievements and historical records.

The hospitalization took place due to a respiratory infection after he contracted Covid-19 and for the reassessment of the treatment of colon cancer.

According to information released by Folha de São Paulo, Pelé was no longer responding to chemotherapy treatment to treat bowel cancer and was under palliative care, receiving measures to relieve shortness of breath and pain without invasive procedures. Earlier this year, he was diagnosed with liver, lung and intestinal metastases.

In addition to cancer, Pelé also suffered sequels from three surgeries he had in the past, one to place a prosthesis on his hip and two others to correct it. Since then, he has suffered from walking difficulties due to knee pain.

During his hospitalization, Pelé was honored in Qatar, host country of the 2022 World Cup, which illuminated a building with the player’s photo and the message “get well soon”, which the star thanked on Instagram. “Friends, I’m in the hospital doing my monthly visit. It’s always good to receive positive messages like this. Thanks to Qatar for this tribute, and to everyone who sends me good vibes,” he wrote.

The King of Football lifted 45 cups wearing Santos’ shirt. His main achievements were Libertadores and the World Cup in 1962 and 1963, respectively.

Considered the player of the century by FIFA and the IOC (International Olympic Committee), the number 10 was three times World Cup champion and is the best scorer in the history of Brazil, with 1281 goals celebrated in official championships. Pelé was also Brazil’s Minister of Sport in the Fernando Henrique Govt.
