Investors gain N13trn as NGX-ASI appreciates by 45.90% in 2023
Nigeria’s Equities Market closed positive on Friday (29/12/2023) by 0.36% as the NGX-ASI increased to 74,773.77 from 74,502.58 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +45.90%.
Market capitalization increased by N148.45 billion to N40,918 trillion from N40.769 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day, also the market turnover increased to N12.820 billion from N5.667 billion.
At the end of the last weekday of trading , a total of 368,629,606 shares in 6,732 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 12,820,167,080.02, were traded.
Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Thursday, December 28), today’s data shows 4% decline in volume, 126% improvement in turnover, but 19% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 40.9 trillion.
In the aggregate, 121 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 50 gainers and 15 losers. Transcorp Hotels led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 70.18 per share, followed by Learn Africa (+10%), Multiverse Mining & Exploration (+9.95%) and Abbey Mortgage Bank (+9.9%).
On the losing side, Sunu Assurances Nigeria came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 5.17% at NGN 1.10 per share, followed by FTN Cocoa Processors (-4.52%), Nigerian Aviation Handling Co. (-4.51%) and Tantalizers (-4.08%). Zenith Bank recorded the highest volume of 28.9 million traded shares, followed by Consolidated Hallmark Holdings (26.6m), Jaiz Bank (24.6m) and Geregu Power (20m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) climbed 271.19 (0.36%) points to close at 74,773.77, representing a 1-week gain of 1.87%, a 4-week gain of 4.89%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 45.9%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 50 Index (+0.95%; +1.81% 1WK; +54.46% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (+0.46%; +2.64% 1WK; +51.44% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+2.85%; +10.12% 1WK; +84.48% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+1.12%; +1.71% 1WK; +114.9% YTD), NGX Pension Index (+0.89%; +2.52% 1WK; +80.8% YTD), and NGX Premium Index (+0.39%; +2.56% 1WK; +53.26% YTD).
