Morocco : Death Toll Soars Over 2.000 In Desvastating Earthquake , Rescuers Work Tirelessly

Rescuers are working tirelessly in the remote, mountainous regions of Morocco following a catastrophic earthquake that struck late on Friday. With a magnitude of 6.8, this is the deadliest quake the country has experienced in decades.

The earthquake rattled Morocco’s High Atlas mountain range, with its epicenter located approximately 72 kilometers southwest of Marrakech, a popular tourist destination. The shallow depth of 18.5 kilometers amplified its destructive force.

Tragically, the official death toll has climbed to 2,012, with another 1,404 individuals in critical condition, according to Morocco’s state TV Al Aoula, citing the interior ministry. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but many have been hampered by damaged roads, making access to the hardest-hit areas challenging.

King Mohammed VI has acted swiftly, ordering the establishment of a relief commission to provide aid to survivors. Eyewitnesses in the Atlas Mountains foothills, near the epicenter, recount scenes of devastation, with homes collapsing and lives lost.

This calamity is reminiscent of the 2004 earthquake in Al Hoceima, which claimed 630 lives, and the 1960 Agadir earthquake, the country’s worst in modern history, with at least 12,000 casualties.

Given the possibility of aftershocks, many Moroccans spent a fearful night on the streets. Health authorities are urging people to donate blood to help the victims.

The historic city of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, suffered damage to buildings and city walls. Videos and photos show crowded squares and makeshift beds set up in open spaces as residents cope with the disaster.

Morocco, known for its rich culture and history, as well as being a major tourist and economic hub, now faces the immense challenge of recovery. Offers of aid and condolences have poured in from around the world, with neighboring Algeria even opening its airspace for humanitarian assistance.

As the nation mourns, flags will be flown at half-staff on public buildings for three days, according to the Royal Palace. The road to recovery will be long, but the spirit of solidarity and assistance is strong.
