Out of 112 nation’s passports that were gathered for evaluation and grading, Nigeria’s passport ranked 100, according to a new quarterly report released by Henley & Partners, a global citizenship and residence advisory firm that ranks countries based on the level of travel freedom, courtesy merit, and citizens convenience. A similar report in 2021 ranked the Nigerian passport  101st out of 199 countries. Less nations were involved in this year’s world passports and travel research.

Henley and Partners Passport Index ranking is described as the original, authoritative ranking of all the world’s passports and has been renowned as the most legitimate the World over.

According to the 2022 Q3 Global Passport Ranking report of the firm, the Nigerian passport provides direct access to just 46 countries without a prior visa. This makes it less valuable than those of Timor-Leste, Niger, Burundi, Nauru, and Djibouti.

Japan ranks number one in the passport index, providing hassle-free entry to 193 countries even without prior visas. Just one country short, Singapore and South Korea are tied in second place, according to the latest Henley Passport Index from Henley & Partners, an immigration consultancy.    

Singapore and South Korea passport holders have access to 192 countries with eased travel conditions. The United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and a host of European nations also occupy the top spots in the index. Prior to the pandemics, European nations were in the lead of the passport ratings, with Germany in the league of respected passport grading.

Ranked 28, Seychelles is the African nation with the highest ranking on the passport index. Its passport holders have access to 153 countries.

The Henley Passport Index is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the largest and most accurate travel information database.

Henley & Partners has been collecting data for its passport index for 17 years. The index includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations. It is the standard reference tool when assessing where a passport ranks on the global mobility spectrum.
