Nigerian Cardiac Society Issues Warning Following Surge in Sudden Deaths Linked to Football Matches

The Nigerian Cardiac Society (NCS) expressed grave concern over the alarming rise in sudden deaths associated with football matches, particularly in the wake of the Nigeria-South Africa match during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023) held in Cote D’Ivoire.

The NCS in a recent statement extended condolences to the families of the deceased and the nation at large, acknowledging the reported deaths of at least four individuals during or immediately after the intense Nigeria-South Africa match.

According to the NCS, “These tragic incidents underscore significant concerns regarding the cardiovascular health of Nigerians.

“While the exact causes of these sudden deaths remain unconfirmed, the NCS emphasizes the potential risks associated with heightened emotional states during sporting events. Sudden cardiac death, occurring unexpectedly within one hour of symptom onset, poses a significant threat, with approximately 50% of all heart disease-related deaths classified as sudden.

“Various factors contribute to sudden cardiac death, including hypertension, heart attack, stroke, and genetic predispositions. Alarmingly, lifestyle-related risk factors such as physical inactivity, tobacco use, and poor diet contribute substantially to cardiovascular disease prevalence in Nigeria.

” Despite these risks, many individuals remain unaware of their cardiovascular health status, highlighting the critical need for regular screenings and preventive measures.

“In light of these events, the NCS urges Nigerians to prioritize their cardiovascular health by recognizing warning signs, managing risk factors, and seeking medical attention when necessary. By adopting heart-healthy lifestyles and promoting early screening, the nation can mitigate the risk of future tragedies.

“Furthermore, the NCS calls upon the government to increase funding for healthcare, enhance institutional capacity, and support initiatives aimed at combating cardiovascular disease. Prof. Augustine Odili, President of the NCS, emphasizes the importance of collective action in addressing the rising cardiovascular disease burden and implementing effective preventive strategies.

“In conclusion, the NCS emphasizes the importance of vigilance, preventive care, and community support in safeguarding against sudden cardiac death. By prioritizing cardiovascular health and implementing comprehensive strategies, Nigerians can honor the memory of those lost while preventing similar tragedies in the future.”
