In a major shake-up, the Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has announced the dissolution of the State Executive Council and the termination of all Senior Special Assistants and Special Assistants, effective immediately.
The decision was made public in a press statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, on Wednesday, January 24, 2024.
According to the statement, all members of the Cabinet, who were appointed by the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, are to hand over to the Permanent Secretaries or the most senior administrative officers in their respective offices. Similarly, all the affected SSAs and SAs are to hand over all government properties in their possession.
The Governor expressed his gratitude to the outgoing officials for their services and contributions to the development of the State. He also wished them well in their future endeavours.
The statement did not give any reason for the dissolution of the State Executive Council or the sack of the aides. However, some political analysts have speculated that the move may be part of the Governor’s plan to reconstitute his administration and appoint new officials who share his vision and agenda for the State.
The Governor assumed office on December 27, 2023, following the death of his predecessor, Governor Akeredolu, who died after a long battle with illness. Governor Aiyedatiwa was the Deputy Governor under Akeredolu and was sworn in as the Governor in accordance with the constitution.
The dissolution of the State Executive Council and the sack of the aides came as a surprise to many, as the Governor had earlier pledged to continue the legacy of his late boss and work with the existing team. However, some observers have noted that the Governor may have faced some challenges and resistance from some of the officials who were loyal to Akeredolu and his family.
The Governor is yet to announce the names of the new appointees who will form his new cabinet and serve as his advisers. It is expected that he will do so in the coming days or weeks, after consulting with various stakeholders and interest groups in the State.
The Ondo State Executive Council comprises of 18 commissioners, who head the various ministries and departments of the State government. The SSAs and SAs are appointed by the Governor to assist him in various areas of governance and policy implementation.
