In a recent controversy surrounding a statement made by the revered Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, an influential member of the Ogboni fraternity , Oba (Ogboni) Adekunle Aderonmu has come forward to clarify the misinterpretation of the Ooni’s words. The Ogboni Lord, who is well-versed in Yoruba tradition and culture, asserts that the Ooni’s remarks were taken out of context and that he has always upheld and worshiped all Orisas with utmost respect.
The paramount ruler of the ancient Yoruba kingdom, is widely recognized as the custodian of the Yoruba culture and traditions. According to the Ogboni Lord, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi’s intention was never to rubbish or disregard any of the Orisas (Yoruba deities), but rather to emphasize the need for unity and peaceful coexistence among all religious and spiritual practices.
Oba (Ogboni ) Aderonmu stated , “The Ooni’s statement was taken out of context. As someone who has worked closely with him, I can attest to the fact that he has always worshiped and elevated all Orisas. His focus has consistently been on fostering unity and promoting harmony among different religious and spiritual groups.”
In a bid to address the misinterpretation of statement made by the Ooni of Ife, Kabiyesi Adeyeye Ogunwusi, regarding the existence of Orishas, Ogboni Lord and cultural ambassador, Oba Adekunle Aderounmu defends the Ooni’s stance and highlight his continuous efforts in promoting Orishas. “ Ooni wouldn’t rubbish Orisa “ Oba (Ogboni) Aderonmu emphasized the Ooni’s significant role in preserving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.
The controversy attributed to Ooni saying that Orishas, the deities of the Yoruba pantheon, do not exist. Oba Ogboni spoke out in defense of the Ooni, highlighting his deep-rooted commitment to promoting Orishas through various cultural events and initiatives. The leader of Ogboni Iwashe (Worldwide) expressed his unwavering support for the Ooni.
In an exclusive interview with Ancestral News from Brazil, he stated, “The Ooni of Ife, Kabiyesi Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has always been a staunch supporter and promoter of Orishas. His commitment to showcasing our cultural heritage is unparalleled.”
According to Oba Ogboni, the Ooni has organized numerous festivals in Ile-Ife, the ancestral home of the Yoruba people, which serve as platforms for celebrating Orishas. These festivals attract both local and international participants and contribute to the preservation and revitalization of Yoruba culture.
In addition to the festivals held in Ile-Ife, Oba Ogboni also highlighted the Ooni’s involvement in promoting Yoruba culture abroad, specifically in Brazil. He revealed that Oba Adeyeye recently inaugurated the national Orisa Day in Brazil, a momentous occasion that brought together Yoruba descendants living in the South American country.
