Yabás: Ìyálórìşàs Awarded In Brazil Parliament As The Nation Celebrates Black Week In Diadema

Awards of Excellence Celebrate YABAS’ Exceptional Service to Orisas and Humanity Worldwide

In a momentous event held at the Diadema House of Assembly in Saopaulo on November 22, 2023, YABAS (Yoruba Ayabas) were honored with Awards of Excellence, recognizing their outstanding contributions to Orisas and humanity in Brazil and beyond. The ceremony, spearheaded by esteemed Honorable legislator José Queiros, brought together a gathering of eminent traditionalists, dignitaries, and cultural enthusiasts.

The Diadema legislative house witnessed the convergence of numerous revered figures, including the Mayor of Diadema, the Commissioner for Culture, Babalawo Eniola, and Iyanifa Cátia Dias, representing the distinguished Regal Majesty of Ile-Ife, Queen Aderonke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi. The absence of Queen Aderonke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi was duly noted and acknowledged.

The amphitheater resonated with vibrant dances, melodious songs, and captivating folklores from various houses of Orisas present. Traditionalists, spanning Ifa, Orisa, Candomblé, Umbanda, and other African-origin spiritual traditions, filled the venue, creating a tapestry of cultural richness and diversity.

Parliamentarian José Queiros, in his address, highlighted the significance of the Yabas, describing them as 15 extraordinary Iyàlórìsàs who have steadfastly resisted discrimination, threats, and racial disparities throughout the years in Brazil. The term “Ayabas,” meaning queens in the Yoruba language, was used to recognize these exceptional women who have elevated ancestral traditions for decades.

“We are proud of them,” stated José Queiros, emphasizing the YABAS’ role in preserving and promoting the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Yoruba people. The Awards of Excellence serve as a testament to their unwavering commitment and dedication to the Orisas and their invaluable contributions to humanity.

The event not only celebrated the accomplishments of the YABAS but also served as a unifying platform for diverse spiritual communities, fostering understanding and appreciation for the rich tapestry of African-origin traditions in Brazil and worldwide.
