Doyen Of Journalism , Afro-Brazilian Gloria Maria Has Died
Brazil’s most successful black journalist and presenter , Gloria Maria has died , the Afro-Brazilian , daughter of Yemonja , the Yoruba sea goddess succumbed to cancer this Thursday , February 2nd , in Rio de Janeiro.
The information was confirmed by TV Globo, the company she worked for several decades .
Gloria had been hospitalized at the Copa Star hospital in Copacabana since January 4th to proceed with an unspecified health treatment.
In December of last year, the doyen of global journalism was removed from the presentation of “Globo Repórter” to take care of her health.
According to reports , It hadn’t been her first removal for medical reasons. Glória Maria was away for almost two years from presenting the program due to, initially, a medical leave to operate on a brain tumor, at the end of 2019, and then due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Born in Rio de Janeiro , Gloria Maria started as a reporter at TV Globo in 1971
As presenter of Globo Repórter, she visited more than 100 countries including Nígeria; covered wars; she also worked at Jornal Hoje, RJTV, Bom Dia Rio and Jornal Nacional.
The President of Brazil , President Lula , Black movements and several other organizations have sent condolences to the journalist and activist .
